In honor of Women’s History Month, we are highlighting women in leadership positions at Brightview Senior Living. Tammy Curry is the Vice President of Health and Wellness.
What qualities make a great leader?
A great leader is self-aware, confident yet humble. A great leader is passionate about developing others. A great leader is empathetic, honest, accountable, creative, and derives satisfaction through making a difference, small or big, in the lives of those they touch.
Why do we need more women in leadership?
The qualities of a great leader are not gender-dependent. Women bring different experiences and therefore different perspectives than men. Diversity of any type brings different ideas, which lead to more effective decisions.
Fortune and Great Place to Work® recognized Brightview Senior Living as one of the 2019 Best Workplaces for Women. What makes Brightview a great workplace for women?
Brightview’s well-being focus, work-life flexibility, and seeking to understand the person as a whole makes it a great workplace for anyone, though sometimes women are more connected to those features. In learning about Brightview before I joined this great organization, I was so impressed with Brightview’s dedication of a full-time manager to associate well-being. Many companies have the mantra “associates first;” Brightview is truly invested, it is not a mantra. And, we have some pretty incredible women leaders!
What does the 2021 International Women’s Day theme “Choose to Challenge” mean to you?
“Choose to Challenge” for me is honoring and bringing attention to women leaders, inspiring girls to dream big, and bringing attention to inequality for girls and women around the world.
What advice would you give your younger self when looking back on your career?
Do the work to stay connected. Relationships built throughout life’s journey are an important part of your story and shape who you are as a person and a leader.
