Creating Meaningful Opportunities for Resident Engagement with our SPICE Program
There’s more to health and wellness than simply the absence of illness or disease. It is an overall sense of well-being and sustaining a positive approach to life, becoming aware of and making good choices to live our best lives possible according to the National Wellness Institute.
Our innovative SPICE Initiative is the foundation for ongoing wellness efforts and the model on which resident programming is based.
Including five holistic elements of wellness – Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual, Cultural, and Emotional – the SPICE approach uses a blend of programs to create meaningful, healthy, stimulating, and positive lifestyles – for residents and associates. Residents enjoy a daily calendar full of enriching and inspiring SPICE programs, important for the well- being of people of all ages.
“The cost of disengagement can be high,” notes Khristine Rogers and Kay Van Norman in a 2011 International Council on Active Aging® summary, titled The Case for Engagement. “People who are disengaged … can experience social isolation, physical and cognitive decline, depressive symptoms, and spiritual discomfort.”
SPICE - Ingredients for Enhancing Life
Spiritual Wellness:
Living with meaning and harmony in life; exploring beliefs and values that create personal peace and understanding.
Physical Wellness:
Choosing a healthy lifestyle that allows individuals to conduct daily activities without undue fatigue or physical stress: lifestyle habits that maintain or improve health and functional ability.
Intellectual Wellness:
Engaging in creative pursuits and intellectually stimulating activities; problem solving and reasoning; valuing education and engaging in lifelong learning.
Cultural Wellness:
Appreciating the arts, crafts, theater, music, travel, etc. of diverse communities and cultures. Gaining personal fulfillment from careers and/or endeavors than contribute to an organization or surrounding community.
Emotional Wellness:
Managing and directing feeling in a realistic and positive fashion; coping with challenges and stress, behaving in a trustworthy and respectful ways, staying connected with others.
