To celebrate Earth Day, we are excited to share highlights from Brightview’s newest community, Brightview Dulles Corner in Herndon, Virginia, which opened last month. From the start, this community has been designed with features that support healthy, sustainable lifestyles for residents and associates. It is currently pursuing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification and Fitwel certifications, which are globally recognized green and healthy building standards.
Brightview Dulles Corner was built to integrate fully into the highly walkable Innovation Center neighborhood. Within walking distance of the new Innovation Center Silverline Metro stop, Brightview Dulles Corner embraces alternate transportation options for residents, families, and associates and provides electric vehicle shuttles and bicycle storage onsite. A public, urban ¾ acre park with a playground and dog park will provide a place for residents and their families to spend time together, mere steps outside the community. Community walking paths offer easy access to fresh air and encourage an active lifestyle .
In addition to the park, Brightview Dulles Corner offers inviting outdoor patios and balconies for residents to eat, socialize, and relax. In fact, over 40% of the site is open space to promote time in the outdoors. Sixty percent of the plantings are native to reduce water and meet biodiversity needs. The greater community will also enjoy three public art installations on site – a mosaic, sculpture, and screenwall that reflect vibrancy and positive life experiences.
Brightview Dulles Corner’s seven-story, modern architectural design is intentionally energy efficient, reducing the community’s carbon footprint by 30 percent. Floor-to-ceiling windows bring plenty of natural light into the apartments and provide views of the beautiful outdoor spaces. Exposure to daylight regulates circadian rhythms, positively impacting resident and associate health and mood. The community’s green roof improves air quality, reduces high temperatures, and manages storm water runoff.
Energy and water efficiency are also important sustainable features of the community. The building uses low-flow water fixtures, which reduces the community’s water use by nearly 40%. Annually, Brightview Dulles Corner will save about 2.5 million gallons a year of water, which is enough to fill about 78,000 bathtubs. The appliances are ENERGY STAR certified, which typically use 15-50% less water and energy than standard appliances.
Brightview Dulles Corner integrates holistic wellness in all aspects of community life, focusing on socialization, mental health, physical activity, and nutritious eating. Through fitness classes, cultural events, excursions, art lessons, and more, residents have full, vibrant days.
