For Jean Crawford, moving to a new home is nothing new. Her husband worked in higher education, and they spent his working years moving across the country with their two children. Now a resident at Brightview Mays Chapel Ridge for about a month, Jean is adjusting quite well.
Jean was born in Alabama but spent time living in Ohio, Virginia, California, and D.C. as she raised her family. Every place brought a new adventure, but Jean particularly enjoyed Charlottesville, Virginia. In addition to raising her son and daughter, Jean went back to school for her accounting degree.
Outside of family and work, Jean was an avid traveler and sailor. “My husband didn’t like to get on the boat, so my best friend and I did a lot of traveling and sailing together for about 20 years,” Jean said. She took advantage of living close to the water in California and sailed there, in addition to trips to Alaska and the Caribbean.
On land, Jean traveled all over Europe, visiting Spain, Italy, France, and England. “I loved the Cotswolds,” she said. “We would rent a cottage, and it was such a delightful area. You could get out and walk through the fields.”
Prior to moving to Brightview Mays Chapel Ridge, Jean lived in a senior living community in Wilmington, North Carolina. However, she wanted to be closer to her son, so she decided to look at communities in his area. “It was a spur of the moment decision to do a visit here, but I left with my reservation,” Jean said. “It’s been a good choice.”
Jean has jumped right into life at Brightview Mays Chapel Ridge by attending SPICE in Motion exercise classes and yoga, bingo, outings, church, music programs, and happy hour, of course! “There is so much that’s offered here,” she said. “The staff is wonderful; they all seem like they enjoy their work and enjoy taking care of us. They make sure we are happy. It’s like they look forward to coming here.”
One of her favorite meals in her new home is flounder stuffed with crab imperial. “All the meals are good, and I particularly like the way they cook the vegetables,” Jean said.
As Jean and her dog Mika are settling into life in Timonium, she has good advice for new residents in her shoes. “Take advantage of all that is offered here,” she recommended. “It is such a nice place to live, everyone is friendly and welcoming, and the programs are interesting and educational. Most anyone could find something that interested them.”
