I want to make sure to thank you and the whole Brightview Woodmont team for the incredible care you gave Dad and my family. As you may remember, he came to Bethesda with 18 months in a skilled nursing facility in NC through COVID. The difference between the two institutions is like describing the difference between two different planets.
I remember the first time Kim walked me through Brightview Woodmont and explained how the care supports here are tucked away because this was a home, not a hospital. Beatrice told me that at Wellspring, the staff would make sure Dad was safe and as healthy as possible, and I could go from being caregiver to just being a daughter again. I couldn’t imagine that world at the time but it turns out they were right.
Brightview Woodmont gave me six months with my Dad where he was being cared for by loving, brilliant, soulful people who took the time to get to know Dad beyond the dementia Dad. They sang to him, joked with him in the humor he preferred, and rubbed his shoulders. They were patient when his anger flashed—AND it did a lot. They did not judge him or me—but cared for the man still fighting to push through the cloudiness of dementia.
The facility is beautiful. Particularly in the first few months, Dad thought we were on vacation together at Brightview Woodmont. He would sometimes look around at the room, or patio and say “This place is really NICE! I’m going to book it again next year.” Or one time he said “They really poured some money into this hotel!” He was pleased to be in a physical space so nice and with such great food. (He LOVED the food.)
And finally, your team helped Dad find ways to engage with fellow residents. He sang a lot to the music constantly playing. He even became a bingo caller for the group’s games which I never would have thought he would do. The team was creative in how they encouraged him to engage.
Overall, I just want to thank you both for welcoming us into the Brightview family. You gave me six months with my Dad for us to heal, to love each other, and to sing together. I will be forever grateful.
